The life of a pawn is simple, tedious and lonely. They have few movement options, do not get to explore around the board, and are often blocked by other pieces in their striving for glory. Many times they are treated like, well, pawns sacrificed for the protection of other, more valuable, residents of the kingdom.
However, occasionally, a pawn gets to realize its true potential. In traditional chess, this is achieved when a pawn survives the battle to reach the other side of the board, where it can be promoted. In Sovereign Chess, promotion is achieved when a pawn reaches the 4x4 square in the middle of the board, marked with a bold, black outline.

In Figure 12, it is White's move. The arrows show all of the different promotion possibilities for White--the White pawn may simply move forward into the center 4x4 square, after which it must promote to a higher piece. However, it may also capture the Black knight, in which case it would also promote.
Alternately, since White also controls the Pink pieces (Rule #11), it may also choose to move the Pink pawn forward into the center square, which would promote the Pink pawn to a Pink higher piece.
Of course, in traditional chess, "higher piece" means a knight, bishop, rook, or queen. Yet, in Sovereign Chess, a pawn may also promote to a king, which leads to Rule #10...
